(Hidden Histories: The Poles at Monte Cassino) 2. světová válka After being invaded by the Germans in the west and the Soviets in the east in 1939, the Poles were liberated during the Battle of Barbarossa. Most then chose to journey 2,000 miles south to join the Allied war effort in Italy. Monte Cassino, an Italian city south of Rome, was eventually captured once the Poles joined the fighting, a win that is considered one of the bloodiest and most brutal of World War II.
